Oracle OpenWorld 2008 kicked off at the Moscone Centre, in San Francisco, on Sunday.

Opening keynotes by political strategists James Carville and Mary Matalin took a look at the state of US politics.

Further keynotes by HP, Intel, NetApp and Oracle will be held over the course of the conference. According to Oracle, these will focus on highlighting collaborative efforts with Oracle and strategies for bringing joint solutions to the market.

"The keynotes will also focus on new business trends and developments," says the company.

With over 43 000 delegates expected from around the globe, Oracle says the event aims to help companies effectively harness information through enhanced business practices, processes, products and services.

Delegates have a choice of 1 800 different sessions, split into applications, technologies and industry-specific sections. In addition, the event has 450 partner exhibits.

OpenWorld will also feature Oracle Develop, a developer programme, during which delegates can learn about development trends and technologies for -oriented architecture, extreme transaction processing, virtualisation and Web 2.0.

Oracle says the programme offers in-depth technical sessions and labs covering the latest development technologies.

"This year's Oracle OpenWorld opens to another record number of attendees and the widest range of programming and products, services and industry sessions to help conference attendees get the most return from their OpenWorld investment.

"Oracle OpenWorld 2008 will feature the customers and partners whose work with Oracle has enabled them to achieve better business results," concludes Tania Weidick, Oracle VP of events marketing.
