A new Trojan that can steal passwords is loose, but there have been no reports of infections in SA yet.
After a "fairly quiet spell" on the virus front, local Sophos distributor Netxactics reports that a new Trojan, Troj/Padodo-Fam, has been spotted in the wild. The Trojan is also known as Backdoor.AXJ, Berbew and Webber.
Netxactics CEO Brett Myroff says there were numerous reports of the Trojan in Australia and the UK yesterday, but no local infections had been reported in SA by this morning. Myroff says analysis is still being done on the new Trojan, but that it arrives via e-mail with an attachment and has the ability to steal passwords.
"Troj/Padodor-A is a backdoor Trojan which allows unauthorised access and control of the computer from a remote network location. It can also function as a proxy," says Sophos.
"The latest Trojan does not seem to be propagating wildly. Other viruses have also slowed down lately - perhaps the recent arrests scared virus authors," says Myroff. "But this doesn`t mean people shouldn`t be vigilant."
