PC gaming hits $10.7bn

sales account for just 30% of revenue generated by the PC gaming industry, according to the first report from the PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA), says PC Retail.

Speaking during his keynote at the Game Convention Developer's Conference in Leipzig, PCGA president Randy Stude revealed that the industry is worth a total of $10.7 billion, with the vast majority of revenue coming from online gaming.

Online gaming accounted for $4.8 billion of revenue in 2007, boosted in no small part by the major success of World of Warcraft.

Consoles sales down

Figures released by the NPD show July was the month when the US video game industry saw a decline in overall sales, says eFlux Media.

However, the sales were up 28% compared to last year and experts believe they will reach the $22 billion figure by the end of the year.

Nintendo's Wii remains the best selling console on the market, with 11.56 million units sold since its release, followed by Microsoft's Xbox 360, which sold 10.67 million units even though it reached the market a year earlier than Nintendo's console.

Gaming alliance formed

In a move that has the potential to bring accurate global sales information to the gaming community, a new alliance has been formed between four industry leading market research firms, says Tech Spot.

The firm includes GFK (Europe), Chart-Track (UK), NPD (US) and Enterbrain (Japan), which will co-operate in providing a monthly "Top Global Markets Report".

The reports are based on point of sale from the world's three largest games markets and will track titles, unit sales, share, dollar sales and other stats.
