Proactivity was identified as a significant security trend by The Burton Group at a recent Dimension Data-hosted event.
Pete Lindstrom, senior analyst at The Burton Group, presented research findings of the top five current information security trends.
The research report is done annually in co-operation with about 250 contributing companies that relate their information security concerns to the group. The trends are divided into business, technology and regulatory trends.
The first significant trend the group identified is proactivity - a theme running through all the trends. Lindstrom explained: "Match deperimeterisation by distributing control points, strengthening end-points, encryption overlays and identity assurance. Meet regulatory onslaught with content-centric protections, and create technology and process-building blocks that promote security as self-organising."
The second major trend is the re-emergence of deperimetrisation. "These days, insiders and outsiders are mixing, so there is no logical place to put a perimeter," he said. In order to combat this, companies need to create control points where they are needed based on business requirements.
The third trend focuses on operating systems security and the need to focus on the 'safe zone' (the time between when a vulnerability is created and discovered) as opposed to the 'patch zone' (the time between when the patch is released and applied). "Think management of assets and configurations instead of compromised systems," suggested Lindstrom.
The fourth trend is that of information-centric security. We need to protect ourselves from a content perspective by having less focus on securing containers and communication and to focus on the data itself, explained Lindstrom.
Finally, Lindstrom discussed compliance as a trend, stating that he believed it to be "the new threat". He said companies are too focused on compliance and too little on attacks or incidents that may have occurred.
