RFID used in warehouse
Polymer and plastics producer Bayer Material Science is deploying a series of RFID and sensor-enabled warehousing and logistics automation solutions using InSync's Edgeware platform, says Using RFID.
The first system manages and automates the placing and picking of high-value assets by using data from Bayer's back-end systems.
Future deployments will involve common processes, such as weighing scales, and other areas of operations that are inherently prone to human error and latency.
service uses smart cards
WhizzGo is a pay-as-you-go car sharing service that operates around the UK and pulled into Birmingham earlier this year, says Secure ID News.
The club issues participants smart cards and PINs which it uses to make reservations online and gain access to cars.
Once a member makes the reservation online, they go to the location to pick up the car. They hold the card over a reader on the windshield that unlocks the car. And once inside, they enter a PIN to access the car keys.
Supermarket punts cellphone shopping
Germany's Future Store supermarket has come up with an interesting way to shop for groceries, reports Into Mobile.
With a few clicks of your mobile phone's camera, Future Store wants shoppers to take pictures of items' bar codes. When it comes time to check-out, all the barcodes that were recorded are tallied up and consolidated in to a single bar code.
An automated kiosk will scan the bar code on the cellphone's display, and prompt for payment - via cash, credit card, fingerprint, and even near field communication in the near future.
