The CSIR has launched a road safety Web site, which arrives in time for the Easter traffic congestion.

"The site, the Road Safety caf'e, aims to provide the latest information on various traffic safety issues for the general public, private sector and government employees," says CSIR project leader Lynn Vermaak.

The Road Safety Caf'e site was officially launched yesterday as part of the World Health Day celebrations. "Road Safety is Everyone`s Business" is the theme for World Health Day 2004.

In another CSIR initiative, a seminar on this topic will take place at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria today, where safety professionals will share the successes of road safety and plans.

According to the Automobile Association (AA), an average of 12 000 to 15 000 people are killed on South African roads every year, while a further 40 000 are seriously injured and 100 000 slightly injured, which costs the country an estimated R13 billion annually.

Other Web sites to assist South African motorists are the AA site, the Shell route planner and information site, and the Arrive Alive site.
