RSA named a leader in Gartner 2013 Magic Quadrant for Web Fraud Detection

Gartner has positioned RSA, the security division of EMC, in the leaders' quadrant of the Gartner May 2013 Magic Quadrant for Web Fraud Detection.

According to the Gartner report, the Web fraud detection (WFD) market grew more than 48% in 2012 as interest expanded across sectors and countries. The report states that innovation in fraud prevention methods is imperative because thieves are increasingly circumventing old techniques such as device identification.

The WFD market consists of vendors that provide software products or services that help organisations detect and prevent fraud that occurs over the Web and mobile channels. It typically applies to three use cases: detecting account takeover; detecting new account fraud; and detecting the use of a stolen financial account when making a purchase.

The Gartner report describes RSA as maintaining its dominant position in the WFD market since 2005, and says its Adaptive Authentication system is used by more than 800 direct customers worldwide. The firm also has more than 8 000 indirect customers using the service. Although the report lists several strengths for RSA, the summary states:

"RSA is actively implementing and further developing its mobile fraud prevention and authentication capabilities; thoughtfully embracing various techniques that help identify and analyse mobile devices, their locations and transactions; and helping to authenticate mobile users."

Stephan le Roux, District Manager of RSA, says: "Gartner bases its analysis on completeness of vision and ability to execute, which we consider further confirmation that our customers see value in our solutions.

"We believe our leadership position is a strong proof point of both RSA's vision and the market's perception of our execution as we aggressively drive our anti-fraud strategy. This has been demonstrated by EMC's acquisition of Silver Tail Systems, as well as product innovations including recent iterations of RSA Adaptive Authentication and the launch of the RSA FraudAction Anti-Rogue App Service."

RSA's objective is to provide its customers with a 'Defence in Depth' approach: all RSA Web fraud detection solutions complement each other by covering the entire end-user Web experience across multiple channels and all touch points.

"From external threat detection and mitigation, to Web site navigation anomaly detection, authentication and transaction monitoring, our solutions have our customers covered," Le Roux says. "Our customers, and ultimately their end-users, will be protected by an RSA solution on every step of their online experience - from shutting down attacks in the wild or detecting account takeovers, new account fraud during authentication or flagging suspicious transactions or behaviour on their Web sites."

The rationale behind EMC's acquisition of Silver Tail Systems was to add to its history of innovation and enhance protection for new use cases to the RSA Fraud and Risk Intelligence portfolio.

"Our customers see that RSA Silver Tail's Web intelligence and behaviour analysis capabilities add a critical layer to our portfolio, allowing us to spot anomalous activities that would not otherwise be visible, including one of the hottest threats these days: application-level distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks," Le Roux says.

"We believe this recognition further validates RSA's efforts to lead the industry in helping customers advance and transform their fraud detection and security capabilities through the innovative use of big data and big data analytics. Also, this acknowledgement of our leadership position only strengthens market validation of RSA's cutting-edge portfolio, and reflects the influence of our savvy customers, who always push us to continue to innovate, execute better and transform our capabilities to provide greater defences against fraud and threats."
