SA commended for ICT progress

A member of the President`s International Advisory Council on Information Society and Development has praised the South African government for development within the ICT industry.

"I commend President Thabo Mbeki for his efforts and the progress made in SA, particularly in terms of the work of the Department of Trade and Industry in developing the SMME sector, and its Industrial Participation Programme," said Sergio Giacoletto, Oracle VP.

Giacoletto was speaking in London today in reference to the fourth meeting of Mbeki`s international ICT advisory council at Edeni Private Game Reserve at Hoedspruit in Limpopo Province at the weekend.

The council brings together 10 world business leaders and key ministers, directors-general and Mbeki`s advisers to discuss developments in SA`s ICT sector. Other multinationals represented on the council are Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, SAP and Alcatel.

"Oracle has been fully supportive of black empowerment in SA, and we have been very closely involved in the ICT empowerment charter process," said Giacoletto.

"Oracle has a strong partner in SA, and for us developing black businesses as partners is perhaps of more importance than the issue of selling equity," he commented.

The issue of selling equity has been at the centre of discussions between the ICT empowerment charter committee and multinational companies represented in SA.
