A new Web site has been launched to serve as a business directory for SA`s Muslim community. The site, www.MuslimCompass.co.za, aims to serve as a one-stop directory for businesses and services meeting specific Muslim needs.

The site, created by Web application designer Omar Abrahams, went live on 25 June and offers business listings at a cost of R120 a year. Each business receives its own page with space for up to 10 products and services, contact details and links to company Web sites. A free classified section is also available to all users.

Marketer Zaida Alli says MuslimCompass was launched because existing local sites with a Muslim focus mainly have religious and information content and do not focus on business.

"Members of the Muslim community are very active on the ," she says, "but very few Web sites their needs specifically. This site would be able to list aspects of restaurants and other businesses and services that meet the Muslim community`s needs, such as Halaal food, salaah facilities, Islamic cr`eches, madressahs, Islamic schools and Islamic after school activities."

MuslimCompass aims to expand its offering slowly, in response to user demands. Among the additional services being considered are a monthly electronic newsletter and "news shorts".
