The South African Communications Union (SACU) has narrowly missed being struck off the Department of Labour's register after filing audited annual reports.

The union had come under fire from the department after repeatedly failing to file audited documents. However, an 11th hour submission means the union will continue to be registered with the department.

Registrar of labour relations Johan Crouse confirms that all outstanding paperwork has been filed. “They are up to date as far as we are concerned.”

SACU filed its final paperwork on 30 April, which means the department did not have to issue it with a notice putting it on a 60-day warning to submit documents or be struck off the register.

The department warned the union in March to submit its financial statements for 2007 to 2009 by the end of the month, or face the of being struck off the register.

In two letters, which are in ITWeb's possession, the department says membership and financial statements were outstanding. Other legal requirements that were outstanding include minutes of meetings, copies of account statements and a list of assts.

SACU president Michael Hare blamed the union's previous auditor for the delays. However, A Khan & Associates has since been appointed, and its statement was signed off on 13 April.

Founded in 1917, the union's almost 5 000 members work in the ICT sector and are represented at companies such as Telkom and the Mail & Guardian.
