Samsung has unveiled its Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games mobile app - Wireless Olympic Works (WOW).
The electronics giant says its Public WOW app connects sports viewers to the actual games in real time, allowing fans worldwide to create their own Olympic Games experience with personalised data settings, sports guides and connectivity to social channels.
The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, are scheduled to take place from 7 to 23 February, in Sochi, Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana.
The app provides sports fans around the world with reliable and immediate access to Olympic event schedules and real-time access to results and medal standings for the sports, athletes and countries they are most interested in, says Samsung.
Public WOW is an extension of Samsung's WOW for the Olympic Family, a mobile data service developed 10 years ago for operational communication throughout the games, offering news and information about the games to officials and staff.
"Samsung is offering fans around the world the most direct access to Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and allowing them to design and personalise their experience in ways that are most relevant to their interests and passions," says Michelle Potgieter, director of corporate marketing and communications at Samsung SA.
The app includes features that allow fans to send cheers to support their favorite athletes, sports and countries, and to share texts and images with other WOW app users and social networks.
According to Potgieter, fans attending the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will have special access to a location-based Olympic Games venue guide through Samsung WOW technology. Users will also be able to access Olympic venue information and navigation services.
"In addition, the app provides information on Olympic Village and venues, so that attendees to the games can easily navigate around Sochi, and displays routes on the map to help fans easily find their destinations," she says.
Android users can download Samsung's Public WOW app via the Samsung App store and Google Play, for free.
