The finalists for this year`s Computer Society of SA (CSSA) IT Personality of the Year award have been named. They were selected through an online nomination and voting process via ITWeb.

Those with the most votes were SARS Ken Jarvis, Novell SA MD Stafford Masie, Torque IT executive chairman Mthunzi Mdwaba, City of Cape Town CIO Nirvesh Sooful, with a joint place for brothers Nkosinathi and Lucky Khumalo - respectively the CEO and chief operations director of Mthombo-IT.

Jarvis, an ICT veteran of almost three decades, is credited with several groundbreaking IT projects, including overhauling the SA Revenue `s IT systems and developing "a single view of the taxpayer" system.

Masie, who took up the position of Novell SA MD last year, was instrumental in Novell`s recent acquisitions of Ximian and SUSE Linux. He also played a key role in Novell`s resurgence in government, the formation of a national Linux and open source ecosystem, and the forging of a black empowerment channel.

Sooful led Cape Town City`s 'smart city` project, which is seen as an example of how ICT can improve government efficiency.

Mdwaba holds a number of directorships as well as serving as president of the Information Technology Association; he is also BITF-national branding and communications executive and logistics executive for the ICT charter task team.

Nkosinathi and Lucky Khumalo founded Mthombo-IT, which is now one of the biggest black empowerment IT services companies in SA. Both brothers sit on the boards of various other organisations.

The judges will interview the finalists this week, and the winner will be announced at the CSSA Annual President`s Awards Dinner on Wednesday, 27 October at the Sandton Sun.
