Undersea cable system Seacom reportedly suffered multiple breaks today, causing slow international browsing.
Internet service provider (ISP) MWeb sent a message to its clients at about 2pm, informing them that both Seacom 10GB links were down and "performance is degraded".
The ISP said "multiple fibre breaks" were affecting Seacom Internet connections, and that no estimated time of repair was available at that time.
Service providers and end-users took to Twitter to report issues, and vent their frustration with the situation - not a first-time occurrence - with several similar incidents having taken place since the introduction of Seacom in 2009.
Hosting company Elitehost informed its customers "Seacom is currently down for SA users", but said it would route traffic via its failover, the SAT3 cable.
Virtual server provider, Virtual Servers, tweeted: "Seacom are currently experiencing issues which may affect the connectivity to your VPS [virtual private server] from International locations only."
Seacom launched as the first undersea fibre-optic cable to connect Southern and Eastern Africa with Europe and Asia, in July 2009. The cable connects SA, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Djibouti with the rest of the world via landing points in France (and onwards to London) and India.
Seacom had not responded to queries by the time of publication.
