In a move to focus on the synergy between the information and communications technology (ICT) and automotive sectors, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) will host a workshop at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Entitled "The Fully Networked Car: A Workshop on ICT in Vehicles", the workshop will take place between 2 and 4 March and will offer key players from both sectors an opportunity to exchange ideas on the future of ICT in motor vehicles.

Speakers representing BMW, France Telecom, Motorola, Nissan, NTT DoCoMo and Volvo will be present, and topics such as telematics and diagnostics, safety, and the integration of in-vehicle systems with existing telecommunications infrastructures will be discussed.

According to the ITU, most major car manufacturers are looking to incorporate some level of ICT functionality into their vehicles, with a fully networked car being the goal of manufacturers seeking improved safety and a better overall experience for the driver.

Other topics on the agenda include that of the introduction of systems that allow communication with nearby vehicles - for example to communicate that a car is hydroplaning and to advise nearby cars of the appropriate action.

There will also be a session focusing on a pan-European call system to automatically generate 'in-vehicle` emergency calls, which can speed-up an emergency response and potentially reduce the number of fatalities, severity of injuries and stress in post-crash situations.

The ITU says the major aim of the workshop will be to show the value of establishing better communication between standards development organisations in order to avoid any counterproductive duplication of effort.
