Keeping up with new technologies is overwhelming IT departments today, says Mark Rivington, VP of technology for the Nimsoft business unit at CA Technologies.
“The past few years have seen massive changes in IT - cloud computing, mobile devices, social networking and other disruptive technologies - all of which have made the job of corporate IT almost impossible.”
He says traditional IT management involved highly process-orientated procedures that took a long time to get from idea to implementation. However, times have changed. “In the modern world, speed to value and time to implement become more important than depth of functionality. The modern IT world has to be extremely agile and able to adapt to sudden changes in technology and direction.”
“The IT department has to look very closely at what it does and try and separate out the 'chore' from the 'core'. It needs to become more of a broker of service and decide which elements of its service delivery can be outsourced to trusted service providers.”
Rivington notes that partnering is all about trust and, as such, enterprises should look to partners that have proven themselves in the marketplace and can provide real-world references from other customers. “Trust is built over time, so enterprises should look to a partner that has been providing ITMaaS [IT management as a service] solutions for many years,” he says.
Rivington will look at new mechanisms for IT management, and outline the Nimsoft solutions, during the CA IT Management Symposium Africa 2012, in Sandton, next month. For more information about this event, click here.
