Duxbury Networking has released an Internet server appliance from its principal Equiinet, which is specifically tailored to the Internet and e-mail needs of small businesses with up to 15 networked PC users.
Dubbed NetPilot Lite, it comes complete with all the connectivity, security and server options needed to enable smaller organisations to deploy Internet access and e-mail facilities both easily and securely, says Graham Vorster, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.
"It integrates key communications, networking and server elements into a single, easy-to-install unit with the flexibility of much larger and more expensive devices," he says.
NetPilot Lite enables multi-user Internet access through a single or dual channel ISDN connection, using the product`s own integrated router functionality.
It is able to administer access to external resources and is able to impose user restrictions, Web access control, Web filters and time controls.
NetPilot Lite acts as a gateway for both internal and external e-mail. For maximum cost-savings on call charges, external e-mail can be delivered and retrieved at pre-determined intervals. In addition, it is flexible enough to collect e-mail from multiple mailboxes with different domain names located at different ISPs.
To save connection costs to the Internet and speed up user access, Equiinet has introduced "boundary caching" functionality in this offering. This allows popular Web sites, pages or parts of pages to be stored locally.
In addition, information, including databases, can be kept up to date on an internal Intranet site residing on the product. Users can develop and amend their own Web pages using tools such as MS FrontPage and upload them onto NetPilot Lite, which has a built-in printer server and file server facility.
