Sony has debuted the Xperia Z2 smartphone at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona. The device is waterproof and combines sound, camera and camcorder. It also features 4K video shooting.

"With Xperia Z2, we have taken our premium Z series to the next level, delivering unique experiences that only Sony can offer," said Kunimasa Suzuki, president and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications.

He says Sony has redefined the smartphone through the 20.7MP camera that provides 4K video shooting. It also features enhanced video mode, allowing video to be captured at four times the detail of full HD, delivering what Sony calls the "world's best camera and camcorder in a waterproof smartphone".

In addition, it includes SteadyShot image stabilisation technology to provide smooth footage on the move. A newly-debuted feature, Movie Creator, allows videos to be trimmed and cropped. Sony also offers other camera apps, such as Info-eye, Social Live and Timeshift Burst, and comes pre-loaded with many of these.

Another feature, Timeshift video mode, allows users to shoot in 120 frames per second and select scenes to slow the playback speed for dramatic slow motion effects exactly where they want, including underwater.

In terms of look and feel, the Xperia Z2 uses Sony's OmniBalance design, with a slimmer and more comfortable feel by having the glass panels encased in a single, solid aluminium frame with smoother edges.

Dust-resistant and waterproof, the screen is built using Bravia TV technologies optimised for mobile, with a 5.2-inch full HD Triluminos display for mobile, while Live Colour LED provides a viewing experience that Sony says is "as close to reality as possible".

The device features stereo speaker output and Sony's noise-cancelling technology.

Under the hood, the Xperia Z2 is armed with high specs, including the fully-integrated Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, with 2.3GHz quad-core Krait CPUs, and 4G LTE. It offers ultra-fast performance and Web browsing, and the Snapdragon 801 also includes an Adreno 330 GPU for rich graphics and gaming.

Its battery is a large 3 200mAh, and the device offers Sony's Battery Stamina Mode, automatically turning off functions that aren't needed when the screen is inactive. Once the power button is pressed, functions will automatically boot up again.

The device will be available globally from March.
