Sony still top LCD seller

Sony remained the top LCD TV vendor in the Taiwan market in January for the second month in a row with shipments of about 21 000 units, states Digitimes.

Local vendors Chimei and Tatung shared second place with shipments about 18 000 units each, while BenQ and Teco were both number three with shipments of about 14 000 units.

However, BenQ's shipment volume was less than expected due to supply shortage, while Teco successfully increased its shipments by reducing its 22-inch LCD TV price to less than $232.60 (R2 361.80).

Pioneer leaves plasma market

Pioneer predicts its net loss for the current fiscal year ending in March will total $1.4 billion (R14.2 billion), in comparison with a previous estimate of $11.4 billion (R115.9 billion), reports Beta News.

The Japanese electronics maker plans to lay off 6 000 full-time salaried employees and 4 000 contract workers both in Japan and other countries.

In a move resulting in 350 job layoffs, the company will shut down two plasma display assembly plants located in the US and Britain. Pioneer plans to exit the plasma display business entirely by March this year.

Vizio jumps the plasma ship

Vizio plans to discontinue its manufacturing of plasma TVs, and shift its attention towards LCD technology, says Top News.

Although Vizio has successfully sold plasma and LCD TVs through retailers like Costco and Wal-Mart, it decided to focus on LCD because the long-lasting, power-saving technology proved increasingly popular with consumers and business users.

The overwhelming preference for LCD models can be gauged from the findings of industry researcher Display Search, which reveal that LCD sells more than plasma by a 7:1 margin.
