South African celebrities taking part in an online shopping spree organised by Ananzi shopping and local online retailers are reported to be having a fine time learning the "e-tail" ropes.

The promotion, running until early next month, sees 12 local celebrities trying their hand at online shopping from one of 12 participating stores. Their experiences are recorded on Ananzi Shopping.

The aim, say the organisers, is to show consumers that e-commerce needn`t be an alienating, scary experience. The celebrity online shopping spree was first devised by Benje Du Toit of gifting site NoGapGifts.com as a way to reach people who still have some fears and misconceptions about shopping online.

Among those who have already taken part are Just Jinger lead singer Art Matthews, who is already a keen online shopper and shopped off www.watchco.co.za. His comment: "Online shopping is revolutionary and essential."

His fellow shopper, 79-year-old Hannah Botha, who plays the role of Elsa in the TV series Egoli, had never shopped online before. She thought her debut online shopping experience buying groceries from Pick 'n Pay Home Shopping was fun. "I did not realise that it would be so easy. It was much quicker and more convenient than I expected and I was very impressed."

Shopping online doesn`t have to be a lonely experience either as singer Sonja Herholdt discovered. She started shopping by herself, but was soon choosing colours and patterns with the help of her daughter. "You realise when you start shopping how to do it and how simple it is."

Communications director-general Andile Ngcaba, Isidingo actor Anrich Herbst, Mr South Africa Andrew Prince, socialite and businesswoman Edith Venter, Miss SA Teen Phuti Khomo and comedian Tshepo Mogale are also on the list of celebrities taking part in the promotion.
