Start-up brings clients streaming in

Johannesburg-based Sonorous Networks is fast making a name for itself in the field of streaming technology with the introduction of what it says is a brand new way of implementing streaming content in the workplace. Officially in business since November 1999, the company already lists two of its first clients as Ixchange and Media Directions.

As company MD Jeff Fletcher explains: "Although there are other companies which provide similar services, the difference is in our implementation, which is on router level and which is transparent to the end-user."

With seven servers in SA and one test server each in the US and the UK, Sonorous Networks' local application has passed muster, and Fletcher affirms, is being met with "fantastic response". "Our main aim for the moment is the marketing of our services - the technology has already been proven to work.

"We don't target the private end-user at all. We intend to give corporates the platform to make content available on the Net, whether it's corporate training material, general advertising or any other type. We're positioning ourselves as a broadcast infrastructure service provider."

Sonorous Networks' services also include the streaming coverage of live events; practise runs included coverage of last year's Grahamstown Festival. The company plans to officially launch itself later this month with coverage of the Cape Town-based Two Oceans Aquarium's addition to its marine life complement.

"We'll soon be targeting large portals and Web sites, and we also have co-branding plans on the cards with Microsoft, as our technology makes use of Windows Media Player products," adds Fletcher.

"We've also got a broadcast e-commerce project underway, which would involve pay per view television content."
