Sun, Oracle alliance delivers

Oracle has announced that Oracle Database 10g will be supported on Sun`s recently launched Solaris 10 operating system for Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron and SPARC processor-based architectures.

"The combination of Solaris 10 and Oracle 10g effectively lowers the barrier to entry for organisations wanting the benefits of enterprise-class centres running on an enterprise-class operating system that is stable and secure," says Deon Els, Oracle SA channel director.

"Previously, organisations were barred from using Solaris because of the cost associated with data warehousing solutions available on the platform, but now customers are able to combine Oracle`s grid technology with a high-performance operating system," says Els.

"Oracle 10g technology does not require the up-front purchase of a single, large server," explains Els. "Instead, customers can start small and then add capacity gradually as their business grows, without having to re-architect their IT infrastructure."

Sun and Oracle have also announced the availability of Oracle Database 10g for Solaris 9 OS for x86 systems.

A year ago, the two companies committed their alliance to providing low-cost offerings to the market. They say delivering Oracle 10g on Solaris for x86 is the first milestone towards fulfilling that commitment.
