Synology debuts slim server

Synology has unveiled the DS409slim, its first advanced NAS server based on 2.5-inch laptop hard drives, says CNET News.

There are a few other NAS servers that use laptop hard drives, such as the Buffalo LinkStation Mini (most NAS servers use the regular 3.5-inch desktop hard drives). However, the Synology DS409Slim offers advanced functionality, including a variety of Raid configurations.

The biggest advantage of supporting small hard drives is the reduction in size of the device - it measures only 4.7 inches by 4.1 inches by 5.6 inches.

India gets DDR3 memory

Signet Computers, the Bangalore-based memory specialist company and of Dataram, a provider of gigabyte-class memory for workstations and network servers, has introduced DDR3 memory upgrades in the Indian market, reports India PRwire.

Targeted towards power users, DDR3 is the successor of DDR2 and offers better and faster transfer speeds.

These new modules are available in 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities. Dataram's DDR3 memory modules, with enhanced performance bandwidth and reduced power consumption, enable a broad range of high performance workstation and server-based platforms.
