A recruitment Web site for the US Marine Corps was hacked yesterday, by a group claiming to be the Syrian Electronic Army.

A posting on the hacked site called US president Barack Obama a traitor, and said American soldiers were brothers of the Syrian army and should be fighting alongside the forces fighting for Syria.

The message also featured a picture of five individuals wearing army fatigues holding signs that said they would not fight for al-Qaeda.

The Wall Street Journal said the site itself was not hacked, rather visitors were redirected.

The Marines said the site is back to normal, and they are keeping an eye on the situation to prevent further attacks. It added that no personal information was compromised.

The message has been taken down, and the Web site has returned to normal. The hack is the latest in a slew of attacks mostly targeting media houses that seem to be escalating amid mounting tension in Syria.

Victims to date include the New York Times, Twitter, Washington Post, BBC, Associated Press, France 24 TV, The Daily Telegraph, The Financial Times and Al Jazeera.

So far, the SEA has only defaced Web sites, but has not committed any really damaging attacks. The group has, however, threatened to launch additional attacks on US government and media, should the US begin military strikes against Syria.
