An announcement is expected later today on plans for an empowerment consortium to buy Thintana`s 15.1% stake in Telkom.
This emerged at a media briefing in Midrand today, where Telkom released its financial results.
Although Telkom CEO SIzwe Nxasana could not comment on the talks, as Telkom is not involved, he confirmed that talks are under way between the government, Thintana and the consortium. He said it was hoped that the deal would be closed today and that an announcement would be made after the deal was finalised.
There has been widespread interest in the possible deal, in which a consortium led by former Department of Communications director-general and Dimension Data SA chairman designate Andile Ngcaba is planning to buy the Telkom stake held by Thintana.
