The mobile system is a reconnaissance mechanism for crime identification, says Dimension Data public sector executive Makano Mosidi.

Dimension will today showcase a mobile technology solution aimed at assisting police.

The company says the solution could help fight crime and increase citizen safety and will be presented at the GovTech event, on this week at Durban's International Convention Centre.

The Mobile Command Centre (MCC) is a mobile video management and communications system that can be customised to provide the same functionalities into other public sector environments, including power utilities, transport and railway.

"The Mobile Command Centre acts as a fully equipped first line defence and reconnaissance mechanism for crime identification, investigation, and tactical support in specific areas and remote locations," says Dimension Data's public sector executive Makano Mosidi.

"This technology-based platform allows police forces to more effectively; monitor people performing their duties; and provide the required access to a number of important applications such as stolen vehicle, firearm registration and an evidence database."

Biometric check

The MCC's capabilities include the ability to read vehicle number plates and to check this against the stolen vehicle database; determine the location of the vehicles and dispatch these vehicles where they are required; and to allow call takers and dispatchers to create, monitor and update multiple incidents.

The system appows portable devices such as Blackberry Playbooks and Apple iPad can be used in the field to communicate back to a vehicle and to access in-vehicle cameras.

It also has specific public safety applications like biometric finger readers, which assist law enforcers to confirm the identity of a person, whether he's wanted or not, as well as access the wanted persons database.

Through the system, public safety law enforcement officers can be given the option of wearing video cameras so that they can stream live video feeds back to a police vehicle and record incidents.

Interior monitoring

The company adds that the MCC provides a communications and interoperability solution for Mobile Command Vehicles for the public safety environment.

"This is an interoperable platform that gives governments the ability to fully integrate their organisations and leverage their IT investments to create an environment that supports change."

Dimension Data developed the system in conjunction with technology partners Geovision and Data911.

"One mouse click on the 'vehicle' icon in Geovision's GIS user interface, gives supervisors a view of the events happening inside a vehicle being tracked," explains sales manager at GeoVision SA, Jacques Taylor.
