A workshop to offer advanced training for the operators of existing African Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will be held in Mozambique in April.
The Network Technology Workshop will be held in conjunction with the sixth annual African Network Operators Group (AfNOG) meeting, and will be aimed at players who are in the process of developing and enhancing a national Internet with regional and international connectivity.
The workshop will be held at the Maputo Conference Centre between 17 and 22 April and attendance at the workshop includes attendance at AfNOG 2005, as well as the meeting of the African Network Information Centre (AfriNIC), which will take place at the same venue between 25 and 27 April.
According to the organisers, the goals of the workshop include training a critical mass of professionals in network infrastructure and services, in order to be able to support an extension of Internet-related activities within Africa.
Other goals are to identify contacts as well as information sources that will promote national development, using international Internet connections, to increase the level of co-operation among existing projects and activities for establishing public data networks in Africa, and to train groups of people who will return to their country and region and teach others what they have learned.
The organisers say attendees should be involved in establishing a publicly accessible Internet presence, in institutionalising its operation, and in assisting their country`s education facilities, businesses, and residents in exploiting the range of services available through the Net.
The cost of attending the workshop and associated events is $1 600, and registration forms must reach the organisers by 15 January. For more information, e-mail workshop-apply@afnog.org.
