Tenbucks.co.za, the site aiming at taking e-commerce to the masses, has gone live today. The concept revolves around making available 1 000 boxes filled with goodies worth an estimated R100, all for sale for R10.
The Tenbucks boxes will be delivered free of charge by Speed Services and R8 of the R10 purchase price will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children`s Fund and the SPCA. The aim is to introduce first time buyers to e-commerce.
The initiative is driven by online coupons provider Tutuka.com, commerce service provider ECNet, and The E-mail Corporation. Contributing participants include AbouTravel, a news service targeted at the business traveller, wildlife Web cam service AfriCam, DigitalMall.com, Ananzi, World Online, Fridge Poetry, Ernst & Young, Old Mutual, Oracle Online and the South African Certification Agency.
Rowan Brewer, CEO Tutuka.com, says the site, which has been live since 7am today, has had 600 sales already, and judging by the rate at which the boxes are being snapped up, all 1 000 should be gone by lunchtime.
Brewer says the site has achieved its primary goal - to attract e-commerce newbies by simplifying the purchase process, and by ensuring value for money. A very positive sign, he believes, was the sheer number of questions coming through the site in the weeks before its launch.
The Tenbucks site has been designed to be simple to use. It guides newcomers through the Internet purchase process in three steps, explaining each module as the customer goes. There is a detailed help section, and the site relies heavily on viral, word-of-mouth marketing for added publicity.
Brewer confirms that the results of this exercise will be used to compile a research document discussing the behaviour of first-time online consumers, and will hopefully lead to better insight of the e-commerce market and new business opportunities.
