Testing - should we automate?

Johannesburg, 14 Oct 2015

Quality assurance and software testing are undoubtedly essential steps and critical components of any systems development life cycle - both for the development of new systems as well as for changes or upgrades to existing systems.

Extensive software testing, while having the potential to save considerable costs in the long run, can unfortunately be extremely time-consuming and costly in the short term.

Properly planned and integrated automated testing can dramatically reduce the time it takes to test, as well as the costs associated with this.

Faculty Training Institute's recently launched "Introduction to Automation in Testing" course allows participants to explore whether automated testing and testing tools would be appropriate in their particular environments.

Using Selenium, which is primarily used for automating Web applications for testing purposes as an example tool, delegates on the course familiarise themselves with the automated testing process and learn how to use automation testing platforms, frameworks and architecture.

While not an exhaustive course on automation, this three-day course was described by participants as "excellent"; "a good foundation"; and "very beneficial if you want to learn the basics of automation". It is scheduled to run again in Johannesburg on 28 October 2015; Cape Town on 16 May 2016, and is aimed at those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the activities and benefits of test automation.

In addition to this course, Faculty Training Institute offers a range of testing courses, including a comprehensive five-month programme designed to take the aspirant tester to the position of software testing practitioner, as well as an SQL course for Testers, ISTQB Foundation Level Certified Tester, a Fundamentals of Software Quality Assurance course and others.
