Ramon Stoppelenberg, the Dutch student made famous by his Web-facilitated journey across Europe, has landed in SA. The 24-year-old traveller`s trip to SA is sponsored by eTravel, an online travel agency, which is hosting him at the exclusive 10 Bompas hotel for the duration of his stay in Gauteng. His flights are sponsored by Comair.
Stoppelenberg will be treated to a three-day safari before continuing his travels in SA, albeit not by the method to which he has grown accustomed - hitchhiking. He has been advised against hitching in this country, and says he may have to rely on his hosts to provide transport for him for the duration of his stay.
"The basic information that the Dutch hear about SA is statistics on crime, and the amount of road accidents here. I don`t think it`s that dangerous; you just have to be careful," he notes.
Though he currently has more than a hundred invitations from would-be hosts in SA, Stoppelenberg is uncertain as to where he`ll go next; the deciding factor is generally the most optimum travel route from host to host. First on the agenda though, is a guest speaking engagement at this evening`s First Tuesday event, to be held at the Wanderer`s Club in Illovo.
