Top Layer targets SA market

Johannesburg, 02 Feb 2006

Top Layer Networks, the corporate infrastructure security company, has increased its focus on the southern African market, placing an increasing emphasis on the design of intrusion prevention strategies for medium to large organisations.

This was confirmed by visiting Top Layer technical director, Mark Armitage, who says that, globally, the intrusion prevention software (IPS) market is in a state of confusion because of the plethora of "point solutions" on offer.

"The challenge for Top Layer - and its South African distributor Duxbury Networking - is to demonstrate to users that even with network firewalls, anti-virus software and even intrusion-detection systems in place, they are not adequately protected against the new regime of attacks that target vulnerabilities in applications.

"Even the best-configured firewall, for example, won`t stop hackers from using SQL database calls to install malware. Nor will an independent intrusion detection system stop attacks that have unknown signatures," he stresses.

Armitage says that together with Duxbury, Top Layer is initiating a number of marketing initiatives to optimise opportunities for security infrastructure solution sales within commercial and government organisations in South Africa.

"Security is no longer all about putting a wall around the network to limit access to all but trusted partners. It`s about ensuring network availability and reliability through the security of individual assets, such as files or databases, by means of a suite of comprehensive security solutions."

He says there is "no let up" on the number of cyber threats - from HTTP worms and zero-day exploits to high-volume denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and unauthorised access cyber and other threats facing online assets.

"At the same time attackers` profiles are rapidly evolving to those professional criminals and their targets are not corporate networks, but the data that resides on them.

"Users require network IPSs that provide increased levels of protection by operating in-line and blocking attacks, exploits and resultant intrusions before damage is done, and losses are incurred.

"These solutions must be capable of intelligently linking events from multiple sources to accurately identify and nullify threats using real-time root cause analysis," he says.
