Toplayer appoints Duxbury as sole distributor

Johannesburg, 04 Sep 2001

Duxbury Networking has been appointed the sole South African distributor for the range of TopLayer enterprise network security products.

TopLayer is a US company specialising in high-speed, high performance network security. It designs and produces hardware and software products that enable network users to implement a comprehensive approach to protection, detection, and containment throughout the network, explains Graham Vorster, Duxbury`s chief technology Officer.

"Companies using the ASIC-based switching products along with Top Layer`s Adaptive Security software modules are able to increase the efficacy of their network defences significantly - and have access to detailed network information that is otherwise unattainable," he says.

"Top Layer products counter a wide range of network threats. They protect the network against denial-of-service floods - particularly at the firewall level - detect criminal intruders and other damaging activity on corporate systems, and contain potential damage emanating from compromised systems through internally directed security strategies."

Matt Percival, TopLayer`s business development manager (EMEA), says the Duxbury appointment is geared towards establishing a significant presence for the TopLayer product set in SA.

"This is the first time we have had direct representation in SA," he says. "Our aim is to cement our position in the market and later enlarge our footprint to encompass sub-Saharan Africa."

Vorster adds that the recent Code Red virus epidemic highlighted the need for multiple lines of defence within corporate security systems. "There is a critical need to look for ways to constantly improve and strengthen the current defences. It might be as simple as keeping virus software up to date. It might also mean taking measures such as load-balancing intrusion detection systems and firewalls to make them operate more efficiently.

"It may also involve an extra line of defence outside the firewall to turn away volume-based denial of service attacks. There`s no one security solution that does it all."
