Transnet – SA’s rail, port and pipeline company – has acknowledged it is experiencing issues with its IT systems.

This follows a report by SA Trucker that the Transnet Port Terminals website is down after it had allegedly been hacked.

According to the publication, reports from insiders who cannot be named because they are not allowed to speak to the media suggest the cyber attack hit Transnet-wide.

This implies that all the companies under the state-run Transnet SOC have been affected, it adds.

ITWeb could not access the Transnet website at the time of writing.

As the custodian of ports, rail and pipelines, Transnet’s objective is to ensure a globally competitive freight system that enables sustained growth and diversification of the country's economy.

In a statement this afternoon, the state-owned company says it is experiencing disruption in some of its IT applications, and the source of this problem is being identified.

“All business continuity plans have been activated. Operations across the group are continuing, with the freight rail, pipelines, engineering and property divisions reporting normal activity,” says Ayanda Shezi, Transnet spokesperson.

According to Shezi, port terminals are operational across the system, with the exception of container terminals, as the NAVIS system on the trucking side has been affected.

In the Eastern Cape, she notes, terminal operations have been halted due to inclement weather conditions, and will continue manually once it is safe to do so.

“The ports authority continues to operate, and vessels moving in and out of the ports are being recorded manually. Customers have been made aware of the disruption and are being engaged throughout the process.

“Work is under way to reduce the downtime to ensure the impacted systems are up and running as soon as possible,” she concludes.
