The National Treasury has taken the popular 'Tips for Trevor' campaign a step further, by moving it onto social media platforms.
Several years ago, finance minister Pravin Gordhan's predecessor, Trevor Manuel, introduced a campaign to allow South Africans to tell him what they wanted to see in the budget. The programme has resulted in many suggestions - some of which the Treasury has implemented.
Gordhan has retained the concept, but it has now also been expanded online, with hundreds of South Africans communicating with the Treasury through social networking site Facebook.
In his maiden speech yesterday, Gordhan said: “South Africans have come to know the 'Tips for Trevor' campaign that accompanied the budget every year. Introduced by my predecessor, minister Manuel, the campaign allowed citizens to contribute to the budget process, and I have continued to draw on this advice.
“We have also used new forms of media such as Facebook. I would like to thank all those that took the time to send in tips, which give us many new and creative solutions to consider.”
There is also a “Pravin Gordhan” page on Facebook, which has 385 fans.
However, the campaign is now simply called Budget Tips 2010, and no longer plays on the minister's name. Tips can also be submitted online at the Treasury's Web site.
