McAfee VirusScan 6.0, Firewall 3.0 from Network Associates available to the consumer via Incredible Connection, Digital Planet

There are nearly 60 000 known computer viruses infecting cyberspace today, with that number growing daily. What `s more frightening is the reach of these viruses: in a matter of only a few hours, a single virus can spread to millions of PCs around the world, causing billions of dollars in damage.

"No computer should be without anti-virus and firewall protection," says Christopher Bray, regional director for Network Associates in SA.

Network Associates has released McAfee Virus Scan 6.0 and Firewall 3.0, now available nationwide from retail outlet Incredible Connection.

Says Bray: "McAfee VirusScan technology detects and removes all types of known viruses from sources including e-mail attachments, Internet downloads, shared disks, CD-ROMs, and synchronisation with your PDA. McAfee VirusScan software also detects destructive ActiveX and Java applets, which are often downloaded without your knowledge while you browse."

"McAfee VirusScan software includes advanced detection technology that consistently finds new viruses. It also provides instant updating via the Internet to ensure that your computer is always protected from the latest virus threats. McAfee customer`s benefit from the experience of the McAfee Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team (AVERT), an international research team that is dedicated to uncovering the latest computer-virus threats and ensuring that PCs remain virus-free," he adds.

"Unlike much of the competition, McAfee`s VirusScan 6.0 comes with a perpetual licence, meaning the software does not need to be renewed every year, and virus-signature updates are free for the life of the product."

Bray also states that with McAfee Firewall 3.0, home users can now also protect themselves while surfing online.

"McAfee Firewall safeguards a PCs connection to the Internet whether it is connected via DSL, cable modem, satellite, or dial-up - and gives users the powerful tools needed to control communications into and out of the PC," he adds.

He points out that McAfee Firewall 3.0 has the following features:

  • .         Enhanced Intrusion Detection: Powerful, yet simple to configure, McAfee Internet Security`s Intrusion Detection System (IDS) detects common attack types and other suspicious activity. Users are able to easily block all further communication from offenders.

  • .         Application Scan: McAfee Firewall scans your PC for programs that can communicate over the Internet, giving you the option to allow the programs you choose to have access to the Internet, while minimising the number of application alerts you receive while actually online.

  • .         Colour-Coded Security and Privacy Alerts: Easily determine the severity of potential security and privacy threats with colour-coded onscreen alerts. You`ll quickly know the level of caution appropriate for each situation.

  • .         Customisable Audible Alerts: Don`t miss a security or privacy concern just because you happen not to be looking at your computer screen! Users can also import their own sounds to be used as audible alerts.

  • .         Enhanced Graphical Display of Network Activity and Attacks: McAfee Firewall now makes it easier than ever to determine what type of activity is taking place when you go online.

  • Bray also points out that, apart from being very popular in the global consumer market, McAfee anti-virus software is on more corporate desktops than any other anti-virus software in the world according to the IDC in 2000.

"Businesses recognise McAfee as a trusted leader in PC protection, safeguarding millions of PCs worldwide," he concludes.
