Trouble on horizon for Intel

Intel appears to be weathering the current global financial storm but it faces a potential hit with a decline in computer hardware sales by both businesses and consumers, says Echannelline.

"The challenge that it will face in the coming quarters is that the business will be more impacted by the economy than a small player," stated Nathan Brookwood, a researcher at Insight64.

Like some other IT giants, Intel has taken its accumulated cash and bought up its own shares to raise their value. But, says George Goodall, senior research analyst at Info-Tech Research, with poor consumer confidence, the company will be seriously affected if Christmas sales in gaming and mobile computing devices take a nose-dive.

Mini notebooks bolster PC sales

With the economy in turmoil, a lot of people who are looking to buy PCs are increasingly turning to cheap, low-power mini laptops, reports PCworld.

According to Gartner, with a strong push from the new slew of mini notebooks hitting the market, worldwide PC shipments reached 80.6 million units in the third quarter this year, marking a 15% increase from the third quarter of 2007.

"The mini-notebook segment experienced strong growth in the global PC market. At the same time, the global PC market finally felt the impact from the global economic downturn," said Mika Kitagawa, a principal analyst with Gartner.
