Universities are starting to offer courses and programmes on information security, as computer crimes become a reality.
The Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) at Wits University, has begun presenting information security master classes, presented by Prof Basie von Solms, who was one of the first IT professionals to hold an information security course in SA.
Rex van Olst, JCSE CEO, says information security "is becoming increasingly important as the threat of viruses, malware and hacking become more prevalent".
The Faculty of Military Science, at Stellenbosch University, presents, as part of its military technology course, a subject dedicated to information warfare, which includes areas such as computer break-ins and hacking, security awareness, and cyber plagues, says its Web site.
The University of Johannesburg has been offering information security as a subject as part of its programming courses on and off for the last 10 years, but it has now become an integrated part of these courses, explains Johan Voster, senior lecturer for the department of business IT.
"It is a very popular subject, with about 55 students on fourth-level attending," he says. "Due to the current market, security has been receiving much more attention from us, with a strong focus around policies."
