World Cyber Games (WCG), first held in 2000, was the world`s first "Cyber Game Festival" and attracts the best gamers from around the world. The preliminaries will take place at Canal Walk in Cape Town and at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Gauteng. The winning teams and players will meet in Johannesburg for the national finals.
WCG SA is subsidising part of the travel and accommodation costs involved for gamers wishing to take part but who live outside Johannesburg and Cape Town. All that is requested by WCG SA is proof of residence in order to claim your subsidy. This includes up to R450 for gamers travelling 500km or more to get to Johannesburg.
The finals are taking place at Sandton City on 17 and 18 September and all travel and accommodation costs will be covered for the teams travelling to the finals.
According to Justin Hawkridge, product manager of IT and Office Automation at Samsung, 200 to 300 contestants will compete per venue, with a maximum of 800 gamers in total over the period.
"Gaming is growing on a global scale and this event helps create an awareness that promotes the growth of gaming locally," says Hawkridge.
The main prize includes an all expenses paid trip to compete in Singapore from 16 to 20 November, plus spending money. Second, third and fourth place winners get prizes from the main sponsor, Samsung.
The games chosen for the competition are Warcraft 3 (WC3), FIFA 2005 and Counter Strike Source (CSS). "CSS is the largest competitive game in SA, WC3 has a strong following world wide and is one of the most popular games and FIFA 2005 is a hugely popular game in SA as soccer is such a huge sport here," adds Hawkridge.
Hawkridge says that CSS has never been competed on in SA: "It`s a first for us and will be very interesting. We are also excited about FIFA, as last year`s South African winner came third worldwide in FIFA."
CSS and WC3 competitors` entry fees cost R120, which includes a shirt and a cap. FIFA 2005 competitors pay R30. Click here to register on WCG`s Web site. Registration will close only when all the allocated spots have been taken. Now start practicing and let`s show the world that local gaming is a force to be reckoned with!
