Webmail interface fails

Following a weekend upgrade to its site, Webmail users have reported problems with the new interface.

One user, David Jooste, says he has been unable to access his account since the weekend. "I have experienced problems each time Webmail has upgraded its interface. I have been shut out of my inbox since Saturday night and links go to blank pages."

A user, who wishes to remain unnamed, reports a more serious glitch that resulted in Webmail exposing users' passwords. "Not only does this give spammers a means of sending mail out, but it compromises Webmail users' personal information. It would be possible to retrieve Facebook passwords, financial information and suchlike," he says.

Webmail announced last week that the re-launch of its services on 1 July would expand its offerings to include voice and videomail, as well as 10GB of storage space free to each of its users. Webmail says it has 750 000 active users.

ITWeb tested the site this morning and found it could access random e-mail accounts.

Dennis Armstrong, marketing and business development director for Interface Media, Webmail's holding company, says the site would be taken down immediately, and restored to the previous environment until the problems have been ironed out.

"Our aim is to provide additional functionality for our users. Whenever we upgrade the site, a certain number of problems can be expected.

"The site has done thorough testing, and we upped the levels of support during the roll-out of the new interface," he explains.

He says since the implementation of the new environment during the weekend, the number of support calls had increased from the usual 80 or 90 per day, to about 110. "Not a huge increase, but each call has been looked into thoroughly."

Armstrong says none of the complaints received had been around the password issue. "Webmail is committed to resolving all these issues as soon as possible."
