Amid concerns over Twitter's growth potential, Twitterati have taken to the platform to share what would have to happen before they would consider leaving the social media site.
The tag #ImNotLeavingTwitterUntil was trending in SA until about 7am this morning as the movement spilled over the local trend line from international posters at around 3am, according to data from Trends24.
However, the tag failed to gain trend traction worldwide, Trends24 data over the past 24 hours shows, as the concept was not listed as trending, failing to beat out other issues such as the six-year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death.
Earlier this month, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo stepped down, to be replaced by co-founder Jack Dorsey on an interim basis, although that move failed to halt the weeks-long slide in the company's shares, Reuters reported. According to the wire service, Twitter stock has shed more than a third of its value since it reported first-quarter results in April.
Costolo quit after pressure from investors frustrated by the micro-blogging company's slow growth. Analysts have noted the site has an uncertain future unless it can reverse slowing user growth by introducing new features that will help it win a bigger chunk of the digital advertising market from rivals such as Facebook.
Some analysts have also questioned whether Twitter, with its 300 million users, could be a takeover target, Reuters reported. Twitter is worth around $23.5 billion, putting any bid at around $30 billion, although the wire service notes the company has denied being in talks.
