Over a thousand delegates are gathered in Geneva this week for the final preparatory meeting ahead of the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in December.
At this week`s meeting, working groups will look at issues such as the right to communicate, Internet governance, Internet security, languages and cultural diversity, media, financing and an enabling environment.
WSIS organiser, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), says more than 40 heads of state and government are expected to attend the first three-day phase of the summit in Geneva from 10 December.
"The interest expressed by leaders from both the developed and developing world is evidence of how information and communications technologies are transforming the global economy and society," says ITU secretary-general Yoshio Utsumi.
The ITU says the WSIS provides a unique opportunity for all stakeholders to develop a common vision and understanding. The summit is aimed at raising awareness among political leaders of the implications of the information society, getting a commitment to tackle the injustice of the digital divide, and to develop new legal and policy frameworks for cyberspace.
The second phase of WSIS will take place in Tunis, hosted by the Government of Tunisia, in November 2005.
