An integration agreement to bundle the Scalix messaging and calendaring server software with a new server edition of Xandros Linux removes one of the last barriers for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) moving to standards-based software, says Conversant Systems.
"Despite the growing confidence in Linux, many companies have been prevented from taking advantage of the lower cost of ownership in the past because they were locked into proprietary e‑mail applications," says Wayne Smith, Conversant MD.
The graphical user interface (GUI) of Xandros Linux server edition is also aimed at making the transition to an open source operating system easier for administrators unfamiliar with the environment.
"The GUI is a key part of the strategy to promote market adoption of Xandros," he says.
According to Smith, the Scalix-Xandros bundle offers local business an easy transition to the Linux operating system, while still supporting a wide range of e-mail clients, including Outlook.
"In today`s connected world, e-mail and calendaring applications are among the most critical to the business but often the most unreliable, complex and expensive to maintain," says Smith.
The integration of Scalix with Xandros Server provides an all-in-one groupware solution through which the management of up to 500 users can be centrally administered via a Scalix management plug-in to the remote Xandros Management Console, he explains.
