A recent study states South African Twitter users are most active on the site at night, while 61% use the site daily.

The study, commissioned by Twitter and conducted by Nielsen, looked at the Twitter habits of South African users and showed the social network is growing in popularity.

According to the study, the best time for a company to tweet would be between 6pm and 9pm on a weekday evening and between midnight and 7am on weekends, when the highest number of South African users are actively engaged on the site.

In SA, Twitter is not dominated by younger generations, with 29% of users aged 16 to 24, 53% aged between 25 and 44, and 18% being over 55. There are slightly more South African women on Twitter at 56%. Most local Twitter users (87%) access the site via a mobile phone, followed by a laptop and then a tablet.

The report states Twitter is used "on the move" and "in the moment", while users are travelling, at school or university, shopping and at live events.

Only 40% of Twitter users actually tweet daily, 52% say they read tweets in their timeline daily, and 37% say they look at the trending topics daily.

Twitter is not only used by South Africans for personal updates but to keep up to date, connect and discover, the report notes. 64% of users say they use the site to keep up to date with breaking news and 39% use it to keep tabs on the latest sports information. 55% engage with people they know and 53% say they engage with people they don't know

According to the study, South African women are most likely to tweet about holidays and celebrities while men tweet about news, sports and politics. The top five topics of interest are music, films, food, TV shows and travel.
