Companies: Keep connected

Johannesburg, 06 Jan 2021

Today’s end-users need mobility and teleworking options more than ever.

ScopServ’s softphone SCOPCOMM rivals any desk phone in terms of features and quality, while being very easy to deploy.

It can operate under two communication protocols. Either via a Web page and the HTTPS protocol or delivered by the SIP protocol via a mobile application. Both of these modes of operation are supported by all operating systems, computers and mobile phones.

It adapts to changes in the network to provide the best possible communication quality at all times, even when the connection fluctuates, reducing the usual drops and echoes. Voice is transmitted over the Internet in HD quality, with encryption to ensure secure communications between the computer and the private telephone system. It is a flexible technology that can continuously evolve to meet the needs of users and businesses.

It is an essential tool for:

  • Self-employed workers who use the same cellphone number for their business as well as for their personal communications.
  • Company employees who use their personal or professional cellphones to make and receive calls with company customers.
  • Additional security and toll fraud reduction. By controlling what regions can be called geographically, toll fraud can be controlled and customers should never be allowed to call an employee’s personal phone number. Softphones eliminate any need for customers to know an employee’s personal contact information. It provides multiple layers of security and reduces business costs by consolidating an end-user's personal mobile device with a private and secure softphone application that can be restricted by administrators at any time.

WebRTC, how does it work?

WebRTC has revolutionised international communications by bringing people in touch in real-time via a simple Web browser connected to the Internet.

WebRTC support is embedded in all major Web browsers and adds ubiquitous support for voice, video and chat. The simple adoption of WebRTC technology allows a user to securely use a computer connected to the Internet to use their Web browser as a softphone.

SIP applications

A SIP softphone app is used for mobility by being downloaded and installed on a cellphone to provide it with a virtual phone connected via the cell account's data network to the corporate phone system. Installing a SIP application separates the use of the cellphone number for personal purposes, while allowing business calls to be received and made from a business phone number. This also simplifies accounting since employees no longer have to expense their cellphone usage back to the organisation. Long distance costs are often eliminated as well by leveraging SIP trunks connected to the private phone system. The SIP app can be bridged with a desk phone so devices ring concurrently (up to three devices can be bridged).

When a call is made to a number on a corporate system and then redirected to an extension, the landline rings at the desk of an employee who has the choice to answer if he is on the phone. Office, or take the call from their mobile phone's SIP app, if it is downloaded and linked to their office extension.

The SIP app installed on a mobile device uses a push notification to the mobile device on incoming calls so the application does not have to be running in the foreground. This means the mobile device will ring when it is called, even when it is not running. These push notifications greatly increase battery life on the mobile device.

Some more advanced versions of the SIP app offer virtual phone applications that are intended to be installed on desktop computers. These offer the same specialised functionality required for corporate call receiving stations, for example.

Additional advantages of a softphone

  • Doesn’t require a dedicated support team for end-user maintenance since provisioning is centralised and automated.
  • Easily deployed on mobile devices using a QR code for provisioning. For the desktop application, the end-user just enters a username and password the first time they use the application.
  • Combined with a good broadband connection and a good quality USB, Bluetooth or DECT headset will provide high-quality voice and video communications.
  • Employees can access their professional directory.

Softphones connect to the company's IPBX from any supported broadband Internet connection. It receives incoming calls dialled to its DID or extension number using the Internet, which bypasses any long-distance costs. For outgoing calls, there are no personal end-user costs incurred. Softphones are ideal for self-employed, mobile and telecommuters, contact centre agents connected through the Internet through a local or remote desktop computer. Whether in WebRTC mode or SIP mode, they are perfectly interoperable with any other device such as a standard landline phone. This allows full communication of all business services for all needs.
