Today, most companies are technology companies, and those that are not, will find that their replacements will be, irrespective of whether they are an upstart or an established company.

So said Todd McKinnon, co-founder and CEO of Okta, speaking at the Okta Forum 2019 in London yesterday.

“Think about companies that didn’t exist a few years ago such as AirBnB, Bitcoin, Spotify, and so many more. Think of the network layer and connectivity too, and how we’ve gone from 3G to 4G and are now heading towards 5G. There has been a mobile revolution; everything is delivered via mobile, and social media has also had an amazing impact on the world.”

These trends are so pervasive that they are impacting every organisation today, and are putting them under pressure to transform digitally, he said.

“However, this presents new challenges. Businesses are not only battling to find the necessary talent to guide them into the digital age, they are having to find better ways to handle customer data in light of the increasingly stringent regulatory environment we find ourselves in.”

Moreover, he said user consent and privacy have taken over the spotlight, and end users are growing increasingly concerned about the implications of giving their data away to large entities.

The slew of breaches that have exposed customer data have been an issue too. “There has been an erosion of trust in technology, and this is the new frontier for us. We have to manage the trust issues, and for Okta, the journey starts with identity, as you have to get identity right to solve the trust problem.”

He said Okta’s platform, which covers workforce and customer identity, is an independent and vendor-neutral cloud-based platform that gives customers the choice of using the technologies that `make them successful’.

“We enable any organiation to use any technology. In fact, we have over 6 500 integrations, making us the broadest and deepest integration catalogue in the industry,” he added.

There isn’t a single vendor that can provide every technology that a business needs; it simply isn’t possible. “This is why we are building a trust platform, not only one that you can trust, but one that will make you trusted,” McKinnon concluded.
