Intervid-Africa removes Avigilon from its products in the South African market

Johannesburg, 11 Jun 2015

Intervid Africa decided on Tuesday, amid increasing legal pressure, to remove all reference to Avigilon as a product from related company material. The move comes after the Intervid-Africa's attempts to distribute the Avigilon product were blocked by Avigilon.

"It's really a non-event for us, with the proliferation of excellent, high-quality competitors coming out of Europe and Asia I think they feel threatened, we believe the future is around open systems, whereby the end-user is not tied into one brand, and one product offering with the price of further upgrades and additions being dictated by that company. Our refusal to force our clients down this channel is what we believe caused this action on behalf of Avigilon."

"Our customers are increasingly asking us to provide open platform solutions which allow for a best-of-breed solution to be built, allowing for flexibility, and competitive pricing options," said Ryan Lumley, Intervid-Africa's sales director.

This comes at a time when brands such as Hikvision, Dahua and Vivotek are making heavy inroads into the integrated IP CCTV and Access Control market in sub-Saharan Africa.

A recent article cited here by Reuters International stated "Surveillance cameras are rapidly becoming commoditised, the analysts said, noting that prices on cameras made by Chinese companies such as Hikvision, Vivotek and Uniview are 30-40% cheaper than similar products made by Avigilon."

"The future is bright for the end-users, they have an ever-increasing quality of system at more competitive rates than ever before, in general the end-user is winning in this scenario and I think that bodes well for the market in general, the companies that don't adapt will fall behind quickly".
