No problems as kulula.com migrates to Exponant

Comair, which operates the low-cost airline venture, kulula.com, says it managed the migration of the Web site`s hosting, service and support functions from Aqua Online to Exponant with virtually no disruption to the public.

Steve Duley, manager for IS and IT at Comair, says this was achieved thanks to plenty of planning before the migration took place.

"It was certainly a tough one, especially as far as the data migration went, but - thanks to the fact that we did a lot of testing and also did our training in parallel - it came off with very little disruption.

"We managed the migration in batches, beginning on a Friday evening, as evenings are generally quiet, and then continuing over the Saturday and Sunday, which are traditionally slow booking days as well," says Duley.

He says that the company had recently purchased new airline reservation software - the Air Kiosk software, supplied by Sutra - and decided to look at a new hosting system at the same time.

"We chose Exponant because, amongst several factors that were in its favour, it is a second- or third-tier ISP. This means that Comair effectively has all three of the major ISPs, namely M-Web, Internet Solutions and UUNet, available at its host, assuring us of better uptime."

Johann Swart, CIO of Exponant, states that the company buys bandwidth from the tier one ISPs and then manages this bandwidth seamlessly across all of them to create full redundancy.

"In real terms, this means we are able to guarantee substantially better uptimes than any individual ISP is able to offer," he says.

"Exponant partitions its bandwidth according to each customer`s requirements and bundles the bandwidth into a guaranteed service solution, including hosting, development, support, maintenance, and management."
