Correction: Seacom billing story
ITWeb recently published a story focusing on a number of issues that clients of Seacom had raised following a cyber attack it suffered a few weeks previously. It transpires that parts of this story were factually inaccurate and we would like to apologise to Seacom for this, and to our readers for any confusion this may have caused.
The leading focus of the story was on billing errors that Seacom’s clients had received. Seacom contacted us and provided input on this; namely, that it is not billing its clients for the period since the attack.
We subsequently investigated the background of the story and followed up with our sources for further clarification on this allegation, and now understand there was an error on our part in the reporting.
Our misunderstanding related to a client’s customers being unable to generate billings themselves, due to the downtime and system issues, rather than Seacom accidentally billing its own clients for large sums.
ITWeb has built its reputation over the decades for its honest and accurate reporting. Part of our ethics dictate that we have to be transparent when we have made a mistake and, unfortunately, this story did not meet our usual high standards.
We apologise unreservedly to Seacom for this error.
