Staff card for safe access

A bank card that allows workers to securely access company IT systems from outside the office is being trialled in the UK, according to ZDNet Asia.

Up to 1 000 staff at Deloitte and Visa will be given new Barclaycard Corporate Visa cards, which generate one-time-use passcodes that allow remote access to the company IT system over a virtual private network (VPN).

The card has an embedded keypad and LCD screen, to allow users to enter their PIN and generate the passcode, which is then authenticated by the VPN.

Barclays cuts 350 IT jobs

Job losses will take place in the global retail and commercial banking technology department this year, staff were told by e-mail, reports ZDNet UK.

The e-mail warns that up to 700 IT jobs could go, but Keith Brookes, national secretary for Barclays at union Unite, said about half of these were included in the 1 800 tech jobs that Barclays earmarked to be scrapped in 2008, under the Global Infrastructure and Service Delivery reform programme.

The bank also announced it would be axing 400 IT posts in January of this year.
