Huawei, WorldRemit partner on mobile money services
Digital money transfer service WorldRemit and Huawei have collaborated to add international remittances to Huawei's suite of mobile money products.
According to the companies, the partnership will allow WorldRemit's international money transfer service to be available to all partners of Huawei's mobile money service platform, which services over 100 million accounts across Africa.
The Huawei Mobile Money solution is available across Africa and includes a range of mobile money services, such as managing bank accounts, remitting money via mobile phones, transferring money from mobile phone accounts to bank accounts or vice versa, and paying for utilities.
The partnership, announced yesterday at the GSMA's Mobile 360 conference in Dar es Salaam, enables Huawei to add a ready-made solution for remittances to its existing suite of services.
"International remittance is a very important mobile money service in Africa, and our partnership with WorldRemit will bring international remittances directly to Huawei's customers across the continent," says David Chen, VP of Huawei Southern Africa.
"Huawei is committed to providing advanced mobile money platforms and technologies to global mobile money operators."
The partnership will also enable Huawei to customise and integrate its international remittance service in each country, providing customers with a better service and lower fees on international remittance from WorldRemit.
Huawei says it built its mobile money services platform to help deliver basic banking transactions in developing countries. The company adds it is in talks with potential South African partners to roll out its mobile money services across the country.
Ismail Ahmed, founder and CEO of WorldRemit, says: "We are delighted to add our remittance offering to Huawei's extensive range of services for mobile money providers. By making it easier to connect to our service, our partnership will accelerate our ability to introduce our safe, fast and low-cost remittance service to millions of people."
WorldRemit says it processes 74% of all international transfers to mobile money accounts coming from money transfer operators.
