MyCiTi commuters are embracing the bus service’s mobile app, with 21 000 downloads recorded since its launch last year.

The City of Cape Town introduced the MyCiTi bus service in May 2010. From date of launch to August 2018, the city revealed the service had recorded 89.4 million passenger journeys.

In October 2019, the city’s transport office decided to make some tech additions, introducing a new app and Web site.

The aim of the online tools is to provide passengers with live updates to track their bus, notifications relating to timetables and routes, an option to calculate their trip fare as well as check their card balance.

Furthermore, commuters have access to a help interface via the app, where queries or notices can be sent to the Transport Information Centre directly.

In a statement, the city reveals the MyCiTi site has been accessed more than 430 000 times.

“I am extremely pleased about the number of downloads. The statistics demonstrate there is a demand for the MyCiTi app, and that it has been helpful to thousands of commuters,” comments Felicity Purchase, the city’s mayoral committee member for transport.

“Public transport should be easy and convenient to use, and predictable, and the app contributes hugely in this regard.

“Commuters use the app as their personal travel planning tool, given that it features live data, which indicates when buses will arrive in real-time. The journey planner recommends to users the most convenient routes and bus times in reaching their desired destinations with easy-to-follow directions, including any transfers they need to make along the way.”

According to Purchase, the live updates on the app make it easier for passengers to get around, and to plan ahead, especially when there are unpredictable factors at play, such as traffic congestion, bad weather and road accidents.

“We have received very positive feedback on the app as a whole. Commuters are enjoying the quick and easy access to all of the timetables and their personal dashboard where they are able to save their specific routes, stops and most visited places,” she concludes.
